R32 vs R410A vs R22: Which Gas Does Your Aircond Use?
R32 is what almost every new aircond uses now. R410A is the previous generation, still very common. R22 is being phased out — and topups get expensive.
Short answer: R32 is what almost every new aircond in Malaysia uses. R410A is the previous generation, still very common in units 3–10 years old. R22 is the oldest and is being phased out globally — topups still work but get more expensive each year. Here's how to tell which one you have and why it matters.
Where to find your gas type
You don't have to guess. Every aircond has a metal nameplate stuck to either the indoor or outdoor unit that lists the refrigerant type. Look for a line that reads "REFRIGERANT" followed by R32, R410A or R22. On outdoor units the plate is usually on the side panel. On indoor units it's often behind the front cover, near the pipe connections.

R32 — the current standard (2019+)
R32 replaced R410A in most new aircond models sold in Malaysia from around 2019 onwards. It cools more efficiently, uses less refrigerant per unit, and has a lower global-warming impact.
- Pressure: higher than R410A, so pipes and fittings are rated stronger
- Topup cost: reasonable, widely available
- Safety: mildly flammable (A2L class), which is why servicing must be done by a technician who knows the correct handling procedure
If your unit was bought new since 2019, it almost certainly uses R32.
R410A — the previous standard (2005–2019)
R410A was the industry standard before R32 took over. Most aircond installed between roughly 2005 and 2019 use it. It's still fully available in Malaysia, still safe to top up, and still supports the vast majority of installed units.
- Pressure: higher than R22
- Topup cost: mid-range, still very common
- Long-term: not scheduled for phase-out yet in Malaysia; you don't need to replace a working R410A unit just because a newer refrigerant exists
R22 — being phased out
R22 was the standard refrigerant for aircond installed roughly before 2005. It uses chlorine, which damages the ozone layer, and is under global phase-out. Malaysia is following the international schedule, which means:
- Topups: still possible, but the price rises each year as import quotas shrink
- Recharge after a leak: expensive and, at some point in the next few years, will not be economical
- Replacement: if your R22 unit needs a major repair (compressor, coil), the cost of replacement is often lower than the repair. See our aircond installation page for guidance.
Why the gas type matters for a topup
Refrigerants can't be mixed. If a unit designed for R22 is topped up with R410A, the pressure spec is wrong and the compressor is damaged, sometimes fatally. Any real aircond technician will confirm the gas type on the nameplate before topping up — and if they don't, that's a warning sign.

- Nameplate check — confirm R32 / R410A / R22
- Pressure test — a sealed system shouldn't lose gas at all; if it's low, there's a leak
- Leak repair — fix the leak before topping up, otherwise the new gas is gone in weeks
- Topup to the correct pressure — with the correct refrigerant
- Cooling test — confirm the unit is actually cold before we leave
Should I upgrade my R22 aircond to R32?
You can't just swap the refrigerant — the compressor, coil, expansion valve and pipe sizing are all designed around a specific gas. Upgrading really means replacing the whole aircond, which is worth doing when:
- The R22 unit is 10+ years old
- It needs a compressor or coil replacement
- Your TNB bill has climbed sharply (newer units are 30–40% more efficient)

Bottom line
