The Japanese brands: Daikin, Panasonic, Hitachi, Sharp
Daikin is a Japanese company founded in Osaka in 1924 and is the market leader in Malaysia. Its parts and dealer network is the widest in the country, which is a real advantage when something fails. More on our Daikin service page.
Panasonic is also from Osaka, founded in 1918, and sits alongside Daikin in the premium tier with a wide parts network. See Panasonic service.
Hitachi is a Japanese brand with a strong inverter range. The company that makes Hitachi-brand air conditioners was previously a joint venture between Johnson Controls and Hitachi; since 2025 it has been owned by Germany's Bosch, which uses the Hitachi name under licence. Build quality remains in the premium Japanese tier. See Hitachi service.
Sharp was founded in Tokyo in 1912 and is now headquartered in Sakai, Osaka. Since 2016 the company has been majority-owned by Taiwan's Hon Hai (Foxconn), but the brand, and its Plasmacluster technology, are Japanese. It's the more affordable Japanese option. See Sharp service.
Midea: where is Midea from?
Midea is a Chinese brand. Midea Group was founded in 1968 in Shunde, a district of Foshan in Guangdong province, and is still headquartered there. It's one of the largest home-appliance makers in the world. In Malaysia it's the leading value brand: lower upfront price, a wide inverter range, and parts that are cheap and easy to find. See Midea service.
Samsung: South Korea
Samsung's air conditioners come from Samsung Electronics, headquartered in Suwon, South Korea, the same company behind its phones and TVs. Its Wind-Free range is the signature feature. See Samsung service.
York: an American brand
York was founded in 1874 in York, Pennsylvania, USA, and has been sold in Malaysia since the late 1970s. The York trademark belongs to Johnson Controls. Since 2025, York's home and light-commercial air conditioners have been made and sold by Bosch Home Comfort Group under licence, while Johnson Controls keeps the large commercial York equipment such as chillers. In Malaysia, York is best known for ducted and commercial systems. See York service.
Acson: is Acson a Malaysian brand?
Yes. Acson started in Malaysia in 1984 under O.Y.L. Manufacturing and is often described as the first Malaysian aircond brand. Its parent group was bought by Daikin in 2006, so today Acson is part of the Daikin group, with its headquarters in Petaling Jaya. There are a huge number of older Acson units in Klang Valley homes, and parts are easy and cheap to source. See Acson service.
Other brands you'll see in Malaysian shops
- Mitsubishi Electric: Japan
- General (Fujitsu General): Japan
- LG: South Korea
- Gree: China
- Haier: China
- Hisense: China
- TCL: China
Brand country vs where the unit is made
The brand's home country isn't always where your unit was built. Many aircond units sold in Malaysia are made in factories in Malaysia, Thailand or China, whatever the logo on the front. If you want to know where yours was made, look for the "Made in" line on the nameplate on the indoor or outdoor unit.
Does the brand's country matter?
Less than people think. For a homeowner, three things matter far more:
- Parts availability in Malaysia. Daikin, Panasonic and Acson are the easiest to source parts for. Some brands' discontinued models can be hard to find parts for.
- Installation quality. A cheap unit installed properly often outlasts a premium unit installed badly. Many problems we fix on budget units trace back to poor flaring or a bad drainage slope, not the machine.
- Right size for the room. An undersized unit of any brand will never cool properly. Check our aircond HP size guide.
As a rough guide: the Japanese brands sit in the premium-reliable tier, Samsung and Sharp in the middle, and Midea and Acson in the value tier, with Acson having very strong local parts support.
