How Often Should You Service Your Aircond in Malaysia?

Every 3 months for daily-use bedroom units. Here's the honest breakdown by room, brand, and how you use your aircond.

How Often Should You Service Your Aircond in Malaysia?

Short answer: every 3 months for daily-use bedroom units in KL, every 4 to 6 months for light use, and once a year for units that barely run. Anyone quoting "once a year" as a universal rule has never opened a KL bedroom aircond after 12 months of nightly use. Here's the honest breakdown.

Why Malaysian aircond needs servicing more often

Three things make the Klang Valley harder on aircond than most climates:

  • Humidity. Coils condense water constantly, and damp coils grow mould faster than dry ones.
  • Fine dust and haze. Especially near KL city centre, Cheras and Klang, fine particulate finds its way through even a good filter and coats the fins.
  • Nightly runtime. Malaysian homes run bedroom aircond 8 hours a night, every night. That's 240 hours a month — the equivalent of a European home running its unit non-stop for a full month.

The result: coils that a European climate would keep clean for 12–18 months in a KL bedroom get visibly clogged in 3–4 months.

Real intervals by room

Bedroom aircond used nightly (most homes): Basic service every 3 months, chemical service once a year. If you don't do the basic service, you'll be paying for a chemical service or an overhaul every 8–10 months instead of a lighter clean 4 times a year — and the total cost is higher, not lower.

Living-room aircond used a few hours daily: Basic service every 4–6 months, chemical service every 12–18 months.

Guest-room aircond used occasionally: Basic service every 6–12 months. The concern here isn't dust, it's mould — the coil stays damp between short runs.

Office / retail units: Every 3 months on a service contract. Downtime costs you customers.

How to tell yours is overdue

You don't need to wait for a schedule — the aircond itself will tell you when it's time. Look for:

  • Weaker cooling than usual (takes longer to reach set temperature)
  • A musty smell when the aircond first turns on
  • A slight increase in your TNB bill even though you haven't used it more
  • Water dripping from the front of the indoor unit (see our aircond leaking water guide)
  • Visible black gunk on the filter when you slide it out

Any two of these together = book a service now, not next month.

Basic service vs chemical service — what's the difference?

Basic service cleans the filter, fancoil fins and outer casing, flushes the drainage, and checks gas pressure. The unit stays on the wall. Takes 30–45 minutes. Right for units serviced regularly.

Chemical service goes deeper — the cooling coil and blower wheel are chemical-washed with proper coil cleaner. Takes 60–90 minutes. Right when cooling has actually dropped or there's a musty smell.

Overhaul dismantles the indoor unit off the wall entirely for a full strip-down clean. Right for units neglected for years or units that smell strongly. Full breakdown on our aircond service page.

What we won't do

We won't tell you to book an overhaul when a basic service will do. If we inspect the unit and it just needs a filter clean and a drainage flush, that's what we quote. Overselling is how service companies lose repeat customers, and repeat customers are the whole business.
